Mark has been coming to Summer Hill House since he was about six years old. Now, he comes every second week.
The first day was hard.
“My husband cried,” Joan says. “He was very emotional.”
It took time to understand what Summer Hill House would mean for their family. Over time, they realised that having a regular break helped them keep going as parents.
Now, Mark knows the routine. A week before his stay, his bag is packed with his medicines and milk ready and sitting where he can see it.
“He knows what is coming,” Joan says.
While Mark is at Summer Hill House, he goes on outings and takes part in activities. Joan knows he is enjoying his stay.
Looking back, she wishes they had started sooner.
“It took us six years to realise just how good it is to have a break,” she says. “Once you know your child is okay, it changes everything.”
