As you might be aware, Achieve has recently taken on a service in Casino, called Windara which houses a nursery, café, function centre and much more. Windara provides employment and training for people with disability and a wonderful inclusive setting for the community to enjoy. The recent plant sale on Saturday, 17 August, saw a fantastic turnout, with 1,780 people visiting between 8 am and 2 pm. The main goal was to free up space in the nursery for new plants, and the team exceeded expectations. The money raised will go towards maintaining the hedge maze and buying new equipment for the café and nursery.
The Windara team welcomed both familiar faces and many first-time visitors who were delighted to learn about the services offered. Families were also delighted by the playground, where children played while parents enjoyed coffee and snacks from the café.
The sale was a big hit, with thousands of plants finding new homes. By mid-morning, all the flowering plants were gone, and by the end of the day, almost all the fruit trees and natives had sold out, clearing a significant amount of stock for fresh arrivals.
Many visitors were pleasantly surprised, saying, “We didn’t know you were here,” and promised to return. Some long-time Windara locals even mentioned that they had never seen so many people at the site all at once.
As the saying goes, “teamwork makes the dream work” – that was certainly true at Windara. Supported employees, other staff and volunteers pitched in to create a perfect day.
It was a great opportunity to not only solve the space issue, but also to bring the community together. We look forward to sharing more updates on the great work happening at Windara.
