Student volunteering is a great opportunity for youth to get to know people with disability and give back to the community by helping out at our fundraising events or other programs.
We have had students from several high schools and universities in the area volunteering with us in the past and it has proved to be a very enjoyable experience for both the students and people we support.
'The Good Life As I See It' Photography Project
Semester Two 2011
Five students from the University of Western Sydney volunteered with our Day Programs to assist with an exciting photography project.
Called ‘The Good Life As I See It’, the project involved Day Program participants buddying up with university students to take photographs of what they considered to be ‘The Good Life’. They worked together to raise funds for digital cameras and visited various locations to capture the perfect image. At the conclusion of the project, participants collated a portfolio of their favourite photos for an exhibition at Araluen to celebrate the International Day of People with Disability.
The inspiration stemmed from Operations Manager, Day Programs, Nathalie Neveu, who had stumbled across a similar project conducted in third-world country, Haiti, where children took photos of things they liked and didn’t like about living in their community.
Focusing on the Social Role Valorisation notion of achieving ‘The Good Life’, Nathalie thought it would be a fantastic opportunity for Day Program participants to express themselves in a creative way.
“It’s also a chance for people we support to meet new people and further develop their networks,” said Nathalie.
